The Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk won the world heavy weight championship last night in a fight against Anthony Joshua.
Ukraine is on top of the boxing world again. Yesterday, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, the undefeated Ukrainian boxer Olesandr Usyk (19-0) met Anthony Joshua (24-2) in a fight for the WBA, IBF and WBO heavywight titles.
The fight was a close one that went all 12 rounds. Usyk initially dominated the fight, but Joshua came back strong from round 5, but after round 9, Usyk took back control over the fight. In the twelth round, Joshua was on the ropes, but he was quite literally saved by the bell.
Roughly since 2000 the culture for boxing in Ukraine has been large with the Klitchko brothers dominating the international scene. Ironically, it was the very same Anthony Joshua who sent Witali Klitchko into retirement in a 2017 fight, ending the Ukrainian dominance in the world of boxing.
